primate, in zoology, any mammal[1] of the group that includes the lemurs[2], lorises[3], tarsiers[4], monkeys[5], apes[6], and humans[7]. The order Primates, including more than 500 species[8], is the third most diverse[9] order of mammals[10], after rodents[11] (Rodentia) and bats[12] (Chiroptera).
Although there are some notable variations between some primate groups, they share several anatomic and functional characteristics reflective of their common ancestry. When compared with body weight, the primate brain[13] is larger than that of other terrestrial mammals, and it has a fissure[14] unique to primates (the Calcarine sulcus[15]) that separates the first and second visual areas on each side of the brain[16].
